To capture and preserve every nuance of a radio broadcast requires a great deal of skill in both design and manufacture, and Naim proved to understand the philosophy through the design of the Naim Audio NAT05. The style here is typically Naim – slim black boxes made from thick metal – with the result that, while the NAT05 is of fairly conventional hi-fi separates proportions, it has an air of understatement about it, as well as purposeful simplicity. It is not hard to fathom out how to use it, but a little effort ensures it is working at its best. The Naim Audio NAT05 is an FM-only radio, but it does come complete with a remote handset and has 99 presets to store stations. The remote is easy to use and numerous presets are available, plus the station frequency can be entered on the keypad to tune right to the station. A gripe with the remote is that when the unit is in pre-set mode and scans through the pre-set stations, only the number is displayed and not the frequency.
The Naim Audio NAT05 has a dead quiet background/noise floor, and there is no sibilance or hissing. It is very dynamic, non-fatiguing, and provides very nice tight low bass. It holds stations perfectly, and never suffers from distracting mono-to-stereo switching on more distant stations. Naim has refined the presentation to leave the listener with music. It plays jazz and clasical with full dynamics, poise, presence and wonderful air to surround the performance with a distinct sense of space and place. However this tuner is unlikely to impress those who habitually listen to rock or dance stations. If the rest of the system is up to what the Naim Audio NAT05 can do, then the listener in for something of a voyage of discovery.
