Description :
In 1983 the revolution was completed by the addition of an aluminium honeycomb cabinet which provided a remarkably high stiffness/weight ratio. The Celestion SL600 set new standards at the audiophile end of the market, selling particularly well in Japan, and winning numerous awards around the world. The English company's Graham Bank and Gordon Hadaway decided that, as the main source of coloration in a box speaker is the box, they would effectively do away with it by making it from the Aerolam material used in airplane construction. The copper-dome tweeter used in the SL600 and its wooden box SL6 sibling also pioneered the resurgence of interest in moving-coil drivers with pistonic metal diaphragms.
The Celestion SL600 speakers provide outstanding imaging capabilities with an incredibly smooth and detailed midrange and a fast, low fundament which is enough for all but the biggest orchestral works. The midrange is absolutely superb and the treble very controlled. The bass extension isn't the lowest, but what is there is beautifully timed. One of the biggest advantages over other seemingly similar two-way designs is that the soundstage does not fold in when the music gets challenging. And, it is among the few metal-dome tweeter loudspeakers that do not provoke listening fatigue in any way. The Celestion SL600 produces extremely good imagery with very good depth. Eventually till now, the Celestion SL600 is on Stereophile's list as one of the "Best top 25 speakers of past 40 years"
