Description :
The Wilson Audio Watt Puppy speakers have been the reference standard for high-end consumer use for more than 10 years. The version 6 has improved over the former version, the 5.1s, in that they utilize new cabinet material and have better cabinet construction and design, and drivers. Originally, the Watt was designed to be a portable monitor for location recording. It had no real bass, so Wilson ultimately developed the Puppy to extend the performance to nearly full-range status. Another difference is that the Puppy is now made of the Phenolic resin used to form their Wilson Audio MAXX and Grand SLAMM top model loudspeakers. This material is far denser than traditional MDF plywood, thus reducing the cabinets aural signature on the loudspeaker. While the Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 6 is only slightly larger than version 5.1, the cabinet space is nearly double and the cabinet itself is far more rigid than the older model. The bracing is completely redesigned, which also factors into improved low-end performance. Around back are sets of new custom-made gold binding posts -- one on the Watt to which the umbilical is connected and one near the bottom of the Puppy for main hook-up -- and the ports for both cabinets.
The Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 6 uses a one-inch Focal inverted dome tweeter, which is an improvement over the one used in 5.1. The midrange drivers are seven-inch Scan Speak drivers and the Puppies are now loaded with two eight-inch Dynaudio woofers. The result is an even faster-sounding speaker with significantly better bass. The Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 6 also comes complete with a full set of adjustable feet known as "Puppy Paws" and bottom base made of the Phenolic resin. The 12-stage WilsonGloss finishing process is comparable to the painting that auto manufacturers like Mercedes do, so the new finish choices are no small concession, especially for something that is a luxury item.
The Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 6 are very neutral speakers that are known for their speed and resolution. They have always been able to rock on the most dynamic and challenging of music. It does bass with greater dynamics and more realistic shading, detail and power than many speakers. It is the quality of the bass, not just the obvious depth and weight that makes it worth noting. The Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 6 reproduces the lowest tones with wall-flexing power and a sense of their place in the mix. When it comes to electric-bass and kickdrum take over, the speakers unravel it all with consummate resolution and clarity. Even at lower listening levels they have bass impact and control -- just as the music are played at levels approaching the real thing. It has a seamless transition from the midbass, which offers some real power of its own and in turn flows like water from the midrange and above. While the Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 6 speakers have electrostatic-like single-driver coherency, there are no ragged transitions between the drivers, all of which come from different manufacturers.
Equally impressive as the bass of the Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 6 is their dynamic capability. These are speakers that can be used for background music or as the main event. They can be listened at very loud levels, in which case they will play with supreme clarity. These speakers go from soft to loud in a realistic fashion. Treble is sweetly detailed and delicate. It sounds supremely extended up top, and the speakers do not dilute this at all, sounding silky in the treble region but never overbearing. Like the fine-tuning control on a microscope, the speakers snap image outlines into view, not by artificially emphasizing any part of the musical spectrum, but by reducing overall distortion. These speakers sound ultra clean, but not in any hyped way. Instead, the music emerges from them with a naturally vibrant sense of life -- only bettered by live music. Hence, the soundstage they throw is enormous, richly populated with properly scaled images, and holographic. One sonic attribute just flows into the next, creating a musical tapestry that is seamless in its quality -- a rare feat for sure. They are highly designed loudspeakers that can pull emotional content from music and film in ways that most other loudspeakers cannot. More than anything else, the Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 6 are enjoyable speakers for the way they communicate the soul of a performance.
