Description :
The quality of digital radio is great when using high bit-rates and with a strong signal, but when crammed with too many services in the available bandwidth and digital radio, it will not sound so good. A combined DAB/FM tuner solves the problem. The Marantz ST7001 tuner uses strengths gleaned from Marantz's CD players, offering short, mirror-image signal paths, plus high-quality power supplies. On the convenience front, there are 200 presets, remote control and simple, logical operation. Analogue and digital outputs are provided, and there are separate aerial inputs for FM, DAB and medium wave. It is signal-hungry, its FM section only thriving when used with an outdoor antenna. On certain stations like compressed pop, there is not much it can do, but with better-quality broadcasts, it sounds well-weighted and decently detailed. Some rivals might be capable of more insight, but the Marantz ST7001 delivers an easy-going and refined listen. Used with an outdoor aerial, DAB reception is good, too, though the digital versions of these stations have a slightly drier sound than the analogue, with a fraction less presence and overall ambiance.
There is a likeable tunefulness in low registers but not quite as well controlled as with some models. It helps underpin many musical styles, and is only perhaps a trifle excessive with solo piano. By contrast, walking basslines in jazz trios and quartets sound just great. Treble is extended but never overemphasised, and has a nice sense of acoustic 'air' under most conditions that makes for comfortable long-term listening, only thickening up a little when it gets really busy. In regards to detail and definition in the midband, it offers a precise and finely etched rendition of instruments and voices alike with solid and consistent imaging. It has a really good sense of energetic musical drive in any kind of upbeat tracks, a feature which for many listeners will override considerations about the finest degree of detail. Indeed, the Marantz ST7001 is a highly appealing and entertaining FM tuner.
