Description :
Although the Marantz CD7300 is currently one of the rare CD-only spinners left in the Marantz line-up, it does make concession to current trends – it will also play CD-R, unfinalised CD-RW and MP3 tracks on CD. Plus, CD-Text display is available, which can be useful. It has the Cirrus Logic CS4396 DAC using multi-bit Delta-Sigma architecture that handles digital-to-analogue conversion chores. One of the properties of the CS DAC is low out-of-band noise and jitter sensitivity, and low noise/distortion at all signal levels. The transport is a VAM 1201 model, a tried and tested product on many Marantz CD players. There are no conventional IC op-amps here; instead, the CD7300 uses Marantz’s proprietary discrete circuit board, HDAM, with discrete surface-mount components, at the output buffer and low pass filter stages. A pair of analogue stereo outputs is provided, plus digital coaxial and optical outs. The Marantz CD7300 is also equipped with a headphones socket that has its own volume control. Purists will be glad to spot the “display off” feature, available on the player’s fascia and the compact remote handset. The chassis is metal, so are the fascia and the whole box – there is an assuring quality about the finish here, it is all class and polish with the CD7300.

Typically, the Marantz approach is smooth and civil, and highly resolving characteristics that seldom appeal to rock fans. The Marantz CD7300 adheres to tradition, but it redefines some parameters and adds a measure of versatility to the results. It got most things right, bringing a more updated sound without trading off on resolution or poise. Nothing sounds cluttered or messy, whatever the material. The Marantz CD7300 is a player that is seldom out of its depth – give a good recording and it will dig deep into the mix, presenting different levels of nuances and delivering spatial information impeccably. It does allow just the right amount of air around each track in a recording, hence the listener will become more aware of the subtleties of the mix. Bass depth and resolution are commendable, the midrange is effortless and neutral, and the treble is clean and sparkling. A slight suggestion of kindness towards more ragged recordings is obvious, but this never gets in the way of the CD7300’s sonic delivery.

The Marantz CD7300 majors on reproducing the weight and body of musical instruments, offering a viable alternative to other players. The double bass is a big, vibrating instrument, while the piano had body and depth, as well as attack in its sound. The CD7300, with its delicate, detailed and revealing high end, brings instruments like cymbals to life. If there are downsides, it would be its pace, which leans more towards the languid than urgent. The Marantz is just too graceful to keep impatient rock music fans rooted to the sweet spot for a while. And while some modern hi-fi equipment is a little upfront in sound, the Marantz CD7300 will be regarded by some as a little laid back in sound. Otherwise this is an excellent CD player, one that reminds one of what the good old values of hi-fi used to be before AV and multi-channel. It is almost like a quick trip to the past, listening to the Marantz CD7300, without some of the shortcomings of the technology then.
