The B&W 805 Matrix speakers emphasize high quality in a small enclosure which will fit into most living-room environments without calling much attention to itself. The 805 uses some B&W innovations first introduced on the flagship Matrix 801 speaker several years ago. The cabinet uses special internal bracing that looks like a honeycomb, thus the name matrix. This design helps ensure that the speakers vibrate, not the cabinet. The cabinet features B&W's multi-cell Matrix cross-bracing, which gives great solidity and low cabinet coloration; when tapped, the speaker rings about as much as a granite boulder. Cabinet interactions are further reduced by mounting the metal-dome tweeter atop the cabinet. The woofer is made from Kevlar, an ideal material for a speaker cone when properly fabricated. The nearly indestructible material is used for bullet-proof vests, automobile tire belts, and canoes. The fluid-cooled one-inch metal-dome tweeter rides outboard on top of the enclosure, encased in its own mini-shell. The B&W 805 matrix speakers are offered in a vertical or horizontal configuration for maximum placement flexibility. The system has been time-aligned by the external tweeter's placement behind the driver panel. High-quality parts are utilized on the crossover circuit boards, including polypropylene film capacitors and hefty cored inductors.
The 805 Matrix are one of the smoothest, most well-balanced, lowest distortion speakers that play without drawing much attention to itself. The B&W 805 Matrix speakers sound open and transparent and can go down to 40 hertz, which is fine for most music other than the deepest organ notes. Midrange reproduction is fast, clean, appropriate timbre and free of nasal or honking qualities. The 805 Matrix has a seamless sonic image of the music spread across the soundstage. It has a perfect stereo image that creates a space where the recording was made, and the "air" of the concert hall can be heard. The 805 Matrix high end is extended and very open. This is one of the rare speakers that sound as if it have no upper limit for reproduction. This contributed greatly to the sense of space and air around instruments, and seems to impart much more spatial information. The accurate imaging, openness and powerful bass response of the B&W 805 Matrix speakers can rival or even exceed some of the best speakers.
