The Mark Levinson 360S is based on the circuit topology of the 360, but as a special "S" version, it benefits from significant component upgrades. It offers a stunning level of improvement over the already exceptional sonic performance of the 360. First, the 360 has two 32-bit DSP chips to handle digital filtering and decoding; the 360S has four. This means that the 360S has twice the computational power and is capable of a wider range of future software options, but this probably means little for current performance. Second, while both have dual 24-bit DACs (Burr-Brown PCM1704) in each channel, the 360's output level matching is accomplished with high-tolerance Vishay potentiometers, while hand-calibrated bulk metal-foil resistors are mated (to a tolerance of +/- 0.0002%) to each of the 360S's DACs. Third, the Mark Levinson 360S uses four-layer cyanate-ester printed circuit boards rather than the 360's two-layer fiberglass/epoxy boards. Finally, the 360S has separate discrete regulators for left and right channels, and local reservoirs for critical components based on relatively rare OSCON caps.
In the Mark Levinson 360S, there are a pair of PHASTlink ports and an RS-232 port for additional control options. The RS-232 port also serves as the connection for the software upgrades referred to above. In addition, the rear panel bears six digital inputs (two AES/EBU and one each ST optical, S/PDIF BNC, S/PDIF coax, and TosLink), an input for an external IR controller, an AES/EBU digital output, and, paired at the left and right ends, balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA-type analog output jacks. The internal layout is equally logical. A central portion is divided into an anterior shielded power-supply compartment and a posterior digital input region. To either side are mirror-image DAC/analog compartments, separated from the central section by shielded dividers. Everything on the Mark Levinson 360S is clearly labeled, down to individual pin assignments.
The Mark Levinson 360S sounds open, refined and transparent from the get-go. It does not try impress by spotlighting its smooth treble or emphasizing its extended bass. The 360S misses none of the details or lacks extension at the frequency extremes. What it lacked is coloration, which means that it is completely untiring to listen to for long periods. It offers an expansive soundstage, and is remarkably free of grain and open throughout the spectrum. The most immediate difference between the 36S and the 360S is the amount of detail and depth to music that is revealed. It feels that the 360S has removed a couple of acoustic glass panes between the listener and the event. Vocals are full-bodied and the acoustic guitar has much bloom and midrange purity. Every voice and instruments in the soundstage are well defined against the background. With sonically pleasing sound, the Mark Levinson 360S will create delightful and emotional experiences for its listeners to enjoy for decades.
