The Sonus Faber Concerto Grand Piano makes an impressive statement with its interior decoration and technically approved dimensions. It is based on a design structure that uses ultra-rigid MDF, covered in black leatherette. The side panels, fabricated from 1"-thick contoured MDF and finished in gloss-black lacquer, are acoustically decoupled by the folded-over leatherette. They are screwed in and glued, to reduce the low-frequency acoustic influence of the large, flat side panels on the drivers. The Sonus Faber Concerto Grand Piano uses an acrylic-treated paper-cone woofer designed by SEAS, crossed over via a first-order filter to a silk-domed, ferrofluid-cooled SEAS tweeter. A passive radiator with a textured cone surface controls the bass backwave. A great deal of attention has been paid to the long-throw motor design to ensure linear behavior, particularly in the transition between forward and rear motion.

The Sonus Faber Concerto Grand Piano brings a relaxed and natural musical presentation. It has crystalline highs and precise mid range. The bass performance has a total lack of boom, overhang, or mechanical tonality. It is very well damped and tight; pitch definition and control were superb. The driver transition to midrange is handled with extreme care, yielding a truly rich, musical quality. Voices sounded appropriately rich, natural, and rounded. The Sonus Faber Concerto Grand Piano's rendition of the piano is tonally appropriate. The tonal flavor is a gradual and mild high-frequency rise gives the speaker a slightly forward presence, one that imparts detail without sounding etched or bright. The center image focus and stability is accurate and outstanding. It has a rich overall tonality and a sharp sense of instrumental texture.

The Sonus Faber Concerto Grand Piano projects a pleasingly wide sonic field with a balanced, harmonically rich soundstage. The music is liberated from the confines of the box and convincingly sized in three-dimensional space. It offers an impressively coherent picture, holding together as a musical entity. The Grand Piano can play reasonably loud while providing realistically wide dynamics at both ends of the scale, reproducing both orchestral and small ensemble groupings with convincing realism and very low distortion. The Grand Piano will remain rhythmically agile and harmonically detailed as the volume is lowered.
