The Audio Note CDT Zero is Audio Note's most affordable transport. Elegantly styled, the transport is fully remote-controlled with minimal controls on player and full complement on remote control handset. The Audio Note CDT Zero has two "emergency" buttons on the rear: open/close and play/pause. The sturdy chassis is made from extruded aluminum fronted by a thick aluminum face plate. The single disc mechanism used is based on Sony CD-1 transport that is smooth and quiet in operation. To keep costs down, the case of each component is fabricated from the same extruded rectangular aluminum tube. The fascias are made from very thick, chunky and neat brushed aluminum panels, and they are simple in presentation too, with a minimum of knobs and buttons. The Audio Note CDT Zero has just one output S/PDIF on RCA. There are no Toslink, AES/EBU, ST optical nor BNC.
When matched with its matching DAC Zero digital analogue converter, the Audio Note CDT Zero is unusually coherent and packs a punchy bass, open and revealing mid section, and sweet extended treble. The voice is immediately and shows in front of the plane of the speakers. The drums beat with appropriate power without being too dominating. It has a layered soundstage that does not mess up rhythms and still gives a realistic spatial sense of the performers and instruments. Combined with other items, this is a very revealing CD player offering a delicacy, rich vibrancy and inherent musicality which seems to override other considerations. It is not perfect but one thing is certain: the Audio Note CDT Zero has that elusive "emotion quotient" and a direct link to the performance which will never bore.
