Rotel's full, fluid and powerful sound has been gaining countless admirers amongst audiophiles and reviewers for over decades. The Rotel RA-04 takes the budget amplifier performance to a new level. It cuts a low, unassuming profile, and build quality and finish are impeccable - the four large feet make for a solid support and the grilled top panel provides ample ventilation for the power supply. It implements the Balanced Design Concept in practice, in the form of high-performance parts and finely honed sound. It is a high-current stereo amplifier that dishes out 40 watts per channel into eight-ohm loads. The Rotel RA-04 is built on a symmetrical circuit board layout, with short signal path routings, and uses British-designed and American-made super low-noise resistors. Six inputs are provided, including one for phono MM and another for media player. It comes with a headphone output and a media player output accepting a 3.5mm mini-jack. Center-indented tone controls and a balanced knob are provided as well. A set of preamp outputs allows stepping up the power via a separate power amplifier. The two sets of speaker terminals can be switched on separately, together or muted, and add to the list of convenient features on the amplifier.
The overall assurance of the Rotel RA-04 is indeed one of its strongest sonic characteristics. It is adept at delivering a solid, cohesive sound with a subtle and delicate touch. It is right on point with bass notes, providing a tight, expertly articulate bottom end. It displays a pleasingly musical treble, and a smooth and open midrange, with little or no additive qualities. Vocals have the necessary texture and bed effortlessly into the rest of the track, though its grasp of subtle sonic details can be bettered elsewhere. The amplifier sounds dramatically more powerful that its modest rating. Played loud, the amplifier shows indications of being stressed, and it handles all sorts of musical programmes in an unforced manner. It keeps a firm hold on the action of fast and complicated tracks, delivering an even-handed sound with superb organization despite thundering instruments and effects-laden vocals. Though not the best of the best, the Rotel RA-04 is still a realistically-priced contender that suits listeners who prefer a cohesive, solid sound with articulate bass.
