Description :
Designed for power and articulate voicing, the Totem Acoustic Forest is at ease with all types of music. Whether in stereo, multi-channel audio or a high-quality A/V application, it creates a synergy between spatial imaging and dynamic power that goes beyond the usual. It is a two-way, floorstanding tower loudspeaker with two drive-units - a 2.5cm SEAS aluminum-dome tweeter and, below that, an Acoustic Technology International (ATI) 16.5cm midrange/bass driver. The narrow profile helps optimize diffraction effects, and allows the drivers to more closely approximate a point source than might occur with a wide-baffle design. The Forest's rigid cabinet, veneered on all six surfaces has a gracefully rounded front baffle with flush-mounted drivers and an angled rear baffle. The enclosure's sharply angled inner floor breaks up standing waves, and the joins are lock-mitered to create a monocoque structure. An internal full-plane cross-brace further strengthens the cabinet. The Totem Acoustic Forest comes equipped with Claws and Beaks which are its anti-resonance devices. The Claw is a self-centering ball-bearing floor interface and support; the Beak Tuning Pod is a supercomputer-modeled device for providing more linearity in the bass.

The midrange/bass unit's reflex port opens onto the rear panel of the Totem Acoustic Forest, just above the four W.B.T. gold-plated speaker terminals (for biwiring). At the bottom of the panel another, smaller hole opens into a compartment separate from the rest of the enclosure; this space can be filled with sand and plugged. The entire enclosure is dampened by hand-painting its interior with a thick, multi-coat borosilicate paste. This paste is also used on the tube of the reflex port, which is made of damped acrylic and affixed with an anti-resonant glue. The crossover, a quasi-second-order unit, uses air-core coils and polystyrene capacitors. All wiring of the Totem Acoustic Forest is specially wound, solid-core, oxygen-free copper wire coated with silver and shielded with extruded Teflon. Most connections are mechanically crimped, not soldered. The twin pairs of gold-plated W.B.T. speaker-cable terminals easily accommodate the four spade lugs per speaker required for biwiring.

The Totem Acoustic Forest has a very controlled, eminently detailed, smoothly tapered bass response that does not excite room modes, and lets the rest of music come through freely on bass-rich recordings. The midrange is very seductive; it excels with vocal, clarinet, and piano recordings, voices and instruments floating free of the speaker positions. The Totem Forest provides a wealth of musical detail, making it easier to delineate spatial positions. The highs are transparent and beguiling, with no audible brightness, steeliness, or metallic edge.

The details of instruments are abundant, and timbres are so well reproduced that there is little difficulty distinguishing the synths from the acoustic instruments. Drums present a very clean, tuneful, well-defined kick that propels the music. Organ chords are musical and clean, but do not provide the deep underpinnings of the music. Clarinets are seductive, entrancing and stunningly lifelike. The Totem Acoustic Forest captures cymbal work accurately - a shimmering, metallic sound rather than something that seemed to be soft, hissing static. But percussion beats may seem to be longer because the shift in energy toward the higher tones emphasized the leading edge of each drumbeat. Guitars suffer from the greater top-end content, with the sound of its strings overwhelming the resonance of the guitar body. The Forests' imaging is first-rate, and reminiscent. They seem to disappear, and leave no audible clues of positions. The soundstage is very wide and deep, the positioning precise, with substantial separation between instruments. In a very well-defined sweet spot between the Totem Acoustic Forest, vocalists can "snap into focus", sounding virtually three-dimensional, with the seamless image of the chorus spread across the soundstage behind singers. The image and the reconstitution of the hall sound are first class and attention grabbing right from the start of musical passages. With its innovative design, incredible sound extension and overall coherence, the Totem Acoustic Forest allows discovery of beautiful harmonics that open up to infinite worlds of spatial sonority.
