Description :
Goodmans are one of the longest established loudspeaker manufacturers in the United Kingdom. For over forty years, their engineers have developed loudspeaker units and enclosures of outstanding performance. The Goodmans Goodwood uses three specially designed and matched units which are housed in an attractive cabinet, constructed from high density chipboard. The plinth is recessed, finished in black and carries the input panel with a non-reversible DIN socket and alternative screw terminals. Supplied with the Goodwood is a 7-meter long lead with spade terminals at one end and a DIN plug at the other. With the lack of standardization between amplifier manufacturers, some of whom use terminals and others DIN sockets, this leads to a flexible speaker that is compatible with most amplifiers. The front grille cloth is black and mounted on a rigid removable frame; although it is acoustically transparent, one does not see the units as they are black and frontally mounted on a black finished panel. The mid-range unit is mounted at the end of a rigid tube extending from the front to back panels and lined with polyurethane foam. The remainder of the internal volume is filled with controlled areas of 3-inch slabs of polyurethane foam. The well engineered crossover network of the Goodsman Goodwood is mounted on the rear panel and consists of a printed circuit board carrying four air-cored inductors, reversible electrolytic capacitors and a wirewound resistor in parallel with the dome high frequency radiator, to reduce its sensitivity to that of the mid-range and bass units.
The bass unit of the Goodmans Goodwood speaker consists of a rigid die-cast frame carrying a massive ceramic magnet. The composite diaphragm uses a heavy fibrous cone with high internal damping, the front surface being finished with a plastic coating which also forms the roll surround. The mid-range unit is a small version of the bass unit and uses a 3-inch composite diaphragm of plastic polymer and fiber. The diaphragm is mounted on a rigid die-cast frame which also carries an unusually large ceramic magnet. The dome high frequency radiator has a diaphragm moulded from synthetic fabric frontally finished with a homogeneous plastic coating. The dome is mounted at the rear of a short, moulded plastic exponential horn which ensures a wide dispersion angle, correctly loads the diaphragm and improves the overall linearity beyond the highest audible frequencies. In this unit, the diaphragm and magnet system are mounted on a plastic moulding and the rear is completely sealed. Inside the Goodmans Goodwood's cabinet, a synthetic gasket is placed between each drive unit and the front panel to ensure that the whole cabinet is completely sealed.
The Goodmans Goodwood speaker can be driven with large power from the amplifier with no audible distortion. The sound radiated by the three units is well integrated for, even with a gliding tone, it was difficult to hear when the signal changed over from bass to mid-range, and mid-range to treble. The speaker has an open, forward tone and the stereo image covers the whole of the space between the speakers. Considering the modest size of the enclosure, the low bass response is impressive, holding up well to 45 Hz, and still audible at 35Hz. Because of the unusually wide high frequency distribution, one's listening position in the room is less critical than with more directional speakers. The Goodmans Goodwood certainly fulfills the expectations of most audiophiles in an exemplary matter, and is a speaker which was in popular demand for many years.
