Description :
The Acoustic Research 338 is treated solid cherry wood grain finish, crafted to form an aesthetically pleasing cabinet. Within it, the units have acoustic suspension, which offers the advantage of good transient response, slow roll-off, and easy interface with subwoofers. The midrange and tweeter are small dome units that are flush-mounted in a vertical array, mirror-imaged between the pair of speakers. The PC board of Acoustic Research 338 holds all the crossover elements. It is filled on both sides with components owing to the multi-order three-way design and attached to the plastic panel that holds the speaker terminals. The inductors are iron-core and the capacitors are unbypassed electrolytics.
The sound of the Acoustic Research 338 can be characterized as light, bright and having a stable tonal balance. It can play cleanly at high levels, and deeper at low levels than a mini monitor but it requires a subwoofer to do that. Its bottom end is enough to be used as a full-range speaker, especially in small room with lots of room gain. They can also be used to form a 5.1 system with a subwoofer and a center channel unit. It can still holds its own at 80Hz so the Acoustic Research 338 is an ideal size for an AV system.
