The Acoustic Energy Aegis 3 is a powerful 150 watt, 3-way, slim-line floor standing speaker that uses the award winning tweeter and metal alloy mid/bass driver system design from the Aegis 'One' and 'Two', with the addition of a new 180mm vented polymer chassis with a polypropylene cone for the bass only drive unit. The mid/bass driver is reflex loaded through a flared port to the rear whilst the bass only unit is housed within a separate enclosure and reflex loaded through a high power flared port to the front. Factory-fitted mass loading is supplied in the base of the cabinet in addition to base plinths and 8mm spikes for optimum stability and coupling to the floor. The result of this impressive flagship system of the Acoustic Energy Aegis 3 speakers offer the discerning listener ownership of a product with impressive scale and depth coupled with a level of detail and clarity unequaled by any most other loudspeaker designs.
When playing music, there is a fair bit of warmth to the sound and the speakers certainly benefit from being driven hard, but they always manage to keep even the fastest of rhythms under control. The bass is snappy and have great presence. Voices have a clean attacking edge which inject plenty of sparkle into the sound. It plays at loud volumes without ever becoming harsh or tiring. Treble, though exuberant, stays on the right side of aggressive, while the fast, hard-hitting bass avoids overblown flatulence. Orchestral tracks have magnificent scale and presence, with an ability to allows the listener follow the individual sections with remarkable ease. The music is forceful but never rammed directly. The sound of string instruments flood the room with sound, making for a performance that is tremendously involving. Every note strikes clearly, and the character of the instruments is beautifully shaped with seductive decay. Instrument tones are maintained even in the loudest passages. Instruments and voices are effortlessly thrown free off the cabinets, creating an image that is almost holographic. The speakers do an excellent job of bringing recordings to life, reproducing a palpable sense of space around the performers and giving the violinists and backing musician enough space for their contribution to shine through. The Acoustic Energy Aegis 3 speakers offer unerring realism, and partnered properly, is unbeatable at the price range.
