The Sansui AU-517 boasts highly accurate reproduction of all signals, and it achieves exceptionally high circuit stability. The power amp input is a dual-FET differential, effective in replacing the input coupling capacitor to achieve all benefits of a true DC. The input is driven by a high current and is especially good at improving the slew rate while drastically reducing the transient intermodulation distortion(TIM) and extend the frequency response of the DC power amplifier. There are two independent power supplies. Each is formed of a power transformer, a rectifier circuit and a constant-voltage circuit. This reduces transient crosstalk and other forms of distortion, and delivers a well-defined sound field with crisper, more transparent images. Should the DC balance of the power amplifier ever be disturbed, two fail-safe circuits in the AU-517 prevent DC components from appearing at the speaker terminals to threaten the speakers.
The phono equalizer of the Sansui AU-517 is designed for minimum open-loop distortion, and requires little negative feedback. Phono overload is a high 320mV RMS to comfortably acommodate even the highest input from a connected cartridge, resulting in an impressively wide dynamic range. The precision tone control features current-source differential feedback amplifier and a pair of potentiometeres for bass and treble with +/- 10dB adjusting capacities. The subsonic filter can attenuate amplified subsonic frequencies that cause intermodulation distortion, to keep musical content intact. The Sansui AU-517 has full monitoring/recording/dubbing facilities for two stereo tape decks. All play/copy operations can be handled by a trio of switches and a rotary knob, permitting a number of practical uses.
The Sansui AU-517 has an overall smooth, clear and detailed sound. It provides plenty of power to just about any speaker size for an energetic, robust sound. It is a serious performer, and also one of the quietest and sweetest sounding component among amplifiers. It portrays a wonderfully rich and transparent sound stage, giving a lifelike appearance to the performance. The Sansui AU-517 is designed to last decades with beautiful and clean sound. It would be very difficult to find another integrated amplifier that matches its technical and sonic excellence any where near its price range.
