Description :
The slim and elegant Royd Apex loudspeaker is a natural development from the Royd Eden and packs all the advanced features contained in the compact loudspeakers. A rather unusual bass/mid driver based on a very strong cast basket, a very light small paper cone, and a tiny 1.5cm voice coil form the basis of the Royd Apex. The hybrid transmission line bass loading, operating like a cross between a reflex and a tuned column, has been adopted to produce the deep bass reproduction of the Royd Apex. Using the electronic crossover associated with the amplifiers allows each loudspeaker drive unit to be driven directly by the output stage of these amplifiers giving an improvement in sound quality that is immediately apparent. Behind the drivers a vertical partition divides the enclosure into a ‘line’ twice the length of the enclosure height, the object being to damp the fundamental resonance of the main driver and augment the bass output at low frequencies. The Royd Apex has been so designed that it can be used with integrated amplifiers of modest price, right through the range to the most advanced active systems available. Active mode operation using an electronic crossover before the power amplifier allows each loudspeaker drive unit to be driven directly by the output stage of the amplifier. The improvement in sound quality is immediately apparent.
The Royd Apex expresses with an impressively communicative and informative musical presentation. The speakers' great balance, fine midband dynamics, speed and clarity are widely appreciated by audiophiles and envied by its competitors. The Royd Apex enthusiastically performs with generous scale, lifelike dynamics, fine clarity and tension. It brings out the nuances in recordings with clarity, and makes listening a more rewarding experience. Acoustic guitars have an analytical, finely etched presentation. The upper strings are harmonically fuller, and the slapped string sound is aggressive. Bass guitars have sharp leading edges to notes and good envelope shape. They have assertive pushes, making themselves feel with real insistence. Bass and kick drum are crisp and powerful, and they cut through cleanly with a great sense of timbre and texture. They pump with a persuasive edge that is rewarding, and also overtly tuneful with convincing pitch resolution. Voices are forward, open, articulate and clearly identifiable within the soundstage. The Royd Apex loudspeakers are amongst the most musically involving loudspeaker, at any price. Its ability in bringing listeners and music closer together is more than a sufficient justification, especially for vinyl enthusiasts with decent quality ancillaries.
