The Onix XCD-99 is a digital audio device that has been designed to very high standards of electromagnetic compatibility. It is constructed elegantly, high gloss black face with gold lettering and buttons. The case is made up of high gauge steel and is quite rigid. The precision Philips CDM12.10 transport is controlled by a CD-7 servo system. The transport of the Onix XCD-99 spins quietly allowing the listener to enjoy unaltered music especially at lower volumes. A Burr brown 24bit/96kHz D/A chip is used for digital to analog conversion plus HDCD decoding of suitably encoded CD's.

The sound of the Onix XCD-99 is generally regarded as being smooth and airy with an openess to it. The soundstage is deep and wide that it feels as if animated when listened to live. The quiet passages can become breathtakingly quiet while the dynamic moments can become extremely intense. It is easy to picture the music being played in the vast and empty surface. It has the ability of multi-instrument layering while keeping the artists separate and having great harmonic capability to recreate proper sound placement. Blazing fast drum works sound exceptionally clear and distinct and lower beats explode with every hit. There are few, if any, of better value/build quality in a CD player with HDCD on the market. One look under the hood proves that the Onix XCD-99 is not a big box with miniaturized basic components. Instead, one finds a menacing, serious piece of audio unit.
