The B&K Reference 30 is designed to sound sensational and be an attractive, easy-to-use addition to a audio/video system. Its silver/black faceplate is inset with an arched display window, nine pushbuttons, a headphone jack, a power switch, and a multifunction knob. The supplied remote control has a small LCD screen, fully illuminated keys, and full preprogrammed/learning capabilities that correct for the tonal and spatial errors that occur during movie's translations. It has a digital notch filter intended for smoothing bass response in problematic situations. When offending frequencies are identified, the filter can be modified to solve the problem. It allows operation of both bass and treble controls for digital room equalization in the digital domain and then granting control over both the affected frequencies and the amplitude of the correction, all from the remote control. Peak limiter is an adjustable dynamic limiter that puts a ceiling on how loudly the system can be driven. It is suitable for those living in apartments or worry about damaging the speakers. A relative volume control is included for the center-channel speaker, all from easily locatable buttons on the remote control, to adjust test signals, on the fly, for the best day-to-day performance and enjoyment. Lastly, the B&K Reference 30 can choose the speakers to see action without tediously flipping menus through one of the numerical keys on the remote.

The sound is presented in a smooth and refined yet uncommonly solid manner. It has outstanding and coherent soundstaging qualities. The bass is utterly transparent, solid and musical with an uncolored presentation that outlines every details out. But what the B&K Reference 30 truly excels in is the movie tracks. The sound processing is agile in the extreme and did a phenomenal job of enveloping listeners in the action. Even in the midst of bombarding of mortars, grenades and ricochet effects, the dialogue remained intelligible and focused. It has excellent multi channel processing with smooth, seamless pans. The B&K Reference 30 is capable of decoding complex scenes while maintaining excellent detail, separation and clarity. It convincingly places the listener in the movie where explosions are powerfully deep and detailed. The combination of general mayhem envelops to an excellent degree.

The switch between DPL processing and Dolby Digital on music demonstrates only an almost insignificant, sonic cost in vibrancy and immediacy that was more than a fair trade-off for getting the performers back on the stage where they belong. The drums are deep and clear. The guitars, both steel and nylon string, are vibrant and tonally right on. The music immerses the listener with smooth, full vocals, capturing every inflection of voices, anchored by a well reproduced bass line. When switched into direct mode, all processing is bypassed, including bass management. Bypassing the ADC’s and DAC’s and processing results in a more lifelike and vibrant sound. The decay sounds more natural and detailed, resulting in a more lifelike performance. The B&K Reference 30 is extremely versatile and given its first-class build quality, very fair price, unsurpassed sonics and one of the most user-friendly operating systems, it gets raves and highest recommendations from audiophiles around the world.
