The Audiolab 8000LX is a classic slim and utilitarian british amplifier that is hefty enough in weight and build quality, but very far from extravagant in appearance. The differences between the 8000A, 8000LX and 8000S are minute. They come in a production order and are natural advances on each other. The 8000A is a classic and shaped the direction of hi-fi in that price bracket. The 8000LX is a revamped model deleting tone controls and the 8000S is a newer version of the 8000LX with a remote function. For the 8000LX, there is an input selector, a record-out selector, a headphone jack, and two LEDs used to indicate standby and power status. The back includes a series of inputs and record-outputs as well as preamplifier outputs and amplifier inputs to support the use with external amplifiers and processors.
The sound is rock-solid, reliable, smooth, with tight and deep bass with fantastic highs. The soundstage is stable, with a discriminating sense of spatial presence, differentiating the foreground from the ambient background. The detail is subtle and it appears almost unintentional. Although the Audiolab 8000LX may be edgy or harsh at normal output levels, it has the potential to be quite dry. But with recordings of the highest caliber, and musical performances to match, the trade-off pays off considerably. Even when the volume is pushed to the high levels, the 8000LX maintains composure and dynamic stride, assuring an even and unrestrained character. If the user makes use of the pre-out/amp-in terminals with an outboard crossover and a powered subwoofer, output limitations are severely lessened. Overall, the Audiolab 8000LX is an outstanding amplifier that produces clear and revealing sound. It is analytical but not sterile sound, good enough for almost any kind of music.
