The Parasound HCA-1206 is designed by the renowned circuit designer John Curl to meet or surpass the strict standards required by Lucasfilm for use in THX Home Cinema systems. The famous Mark Levinson JC2 preamplifier is also designed by him where the JC2 letters are actually his initials. Each part within the Parasound HCA-1206 has been carefully selected for optimum sound quality on even the most challenging music and film soundtracks. Long known for the high quality of their power amplifiers, Parasound has entered the home theater market as a major contender with this electronic component.
The Parasound HCA-1206 has a very sturdy and heavy build, weighing about a hefty 30kg, with a rack mount style chassis. It is designed to operate with high idling, or bias, current to reduce higher order harmonic distortion. Hand picked complementary MOSFETs are used for the high voltage driver stages with individual regulated power supplies to support them, while bipolar devices are use in the output stage. It can be configured for full six-channel operation, or for just a few channels by bridging with switches on the back. Besides a power on/off rocker switch on the front, there are overload indicators as well as independent power supplies for each channel. The power supplies are made up of computer-grade capacitors. The binding posts will accept bare wire, banana plugs, and spade lugs. The RCA input metal jacks are gold-plated. When played, the Parasound HCA-1206 makes the sound much more detailed and clear, and it controls music passages very well. It can produce powerful music as well as staying completely silent at appropriate moments. The sound is extremely smooth with no noise or hum. It maintains power and control over the speakers, producing magnificent music. The drawbacks are the heavy weight and extra space to air the power amplifier because it gets warm easily.
