When the Thiel SCS series was conceived back in the early 90s, it was a perfect platform for Jim Thiel to give the Coherent Source philosophy a coaxial/coincident driver. The idea for the speaker was one that would be reasonably inexpensive, very flexible in terms of placement and orientation, attractively finished, suitable for just about any type of home audio application - 2 channel stereo, any position in a home theatre. The Thiel SCS2 was introduced in 1997 and saw the introduction of metal driver diaphragms that Thiel had fallen in love with. Also, dual symmetrical ports on either side of the woofer and styrene reinforced cones debuted. The Thiel SCS2 was Thiel's entry into the nascent home theater market. The SCS2 was designed in a way that went against Thiel's own tradition and using a second-order crossover. These coaxial speakers were relatively easy to make coherent. The SCS2 passed square pulses quite nicely, even with its un-Thiel-ish 2nd-order crossover. Coherence was at the expense of frequency response, however, was a terrible tradeoff - optimizing the inaudible while degrading the audible. The Thiel SCS2 has beautiful build quality. It is able to quickly convert from quasi-sealed-box to vented-box design by pulling the foam plugs from the unit's two ducted ports. The frequency moves from 80Hz down to 42Hz. Though the bass response remains flat, but the efficiency drops. Low woofer distortion down to well below 100Hz.
