Description :
The Thiel CS2.3 speakers have been designed and built to optimize a core set of attributes: flat frequency response, time and phase coherence, low energy storage, and low distortion. These are the goals for the Thiel Model 03 in 1978, and have remained the goals for Thiel speakers ever since. The design features that these goals lead to the Coherent Source configuration and sloping front panels, curved baffles, massively braced cabinets, underhung dynamic drivers, etc, have remained constant as well, and become high-end fixtures. The Thiel CS2.3 speakers are critical in positioning for good results. When well done, the soundstage is noticeably wide and deep. The center image is solid. Thiel recommends an equilateral triangle placement scheme if possible, as opposed to a typical isosceles setup. The sound comes from the plane of the speakers and extended back several feet beyond the back wall.
The CS2.3 speakers have near edge-of-the-art resolution and dynamics, seamless coherency, along with extension at the frequency extremes. It has high resolving power that displays good and bad from source material and upstream components. Voices are clear and distinct from each other. Transient response is excellent and there is no evidence of any kind of compression when the volume is increased. However, due to the nature of the drivers used, when the equipment is not matched properly, there will be a significant amount of high frequency content which becomes almost too much. The quality is evident on guitars and percussive instruments that have a slight edge to them. The Thiel CS2.3's are extremely well defined in the mid and upper-bass range, and give the impression of tightness and control. Voice from this speaker is especially good in terms of dimensionality, fullness, size, and focus. The voice just seemed to hang in the air while the other instruments had a similar effect with a relatively black background and lots of air and space. Dynamics are excellent as evidenced by the drum and percussive sounds. Thiel speakers tend to have the tight, dynamic, attacking bass that rockers love. Imaging is also great within a very naturally presented recorded space with the feel of a real acoustic. The size of everything is portrayed with great realism and helps to further the illusion of a live acoustic event.
