The Audio Research SP16L is the line version of the Audio Research SP16 which is supposed to be a replacement model that superseeds the SP9. The SP16L is a pure Class-A design with all-valve gain, via selected 12AX7 tubes in the circuit. Sonically, the Audio Research SP16L is pure fun as it easily unravels fine musical lines, bouncing along with surprising micro and macro-dynamic swings. The soundstage is big, airy and dimensional. In instrumental tones, the bass is full, if not necessarily as deep as it can be. But what’s there is very well defined. On the other end of the spectrum, cymbals, triangles and such are rendered with the appropriate shimmer. The SP16L's high frequencies are well balanced with its bass and represent a very well-thought-out set of tradeoffs. The midrange of the SP16L, where lies most of the music, especially voice, is wonderful. The subtle details that makes the recorded space of the live tracks distinctly different from that of the studio cuts are clearly evident. Vocals have real body, making singers in the recordings sound like they're singing just for the listener. The SP16L is so good that it can be partnered with a vintage D100 or a new VT200MKII and sound glorious either way.
