The Quad 303 represents a high point in the early epoch of transistor amplifier design. The Quad 303 amplifier was Quad's first solid state amplifier after the success of the Quad 22 valve amplifier. True, it is a single rail design, and therefore relies on an output coupling capacitor; a component that compromises LF performance to some degree. Nevertheless, the design has stood the test of time and still gives an excellent performance; even by today's standards. The Quad 303 power amp is perhaps the more well known of the two components. Not only does it have the unique "triples" circuit, but it also has a reputation for robustness and is known for sound quality even now. The genius of the circuit lies in the innovative use of "output triples", which renders the current in the output stage virtually immune from temperature changes and ensures stable performance under widely varying conditions. As for the sound, a mint 33/303 combination will upset audiophiles who refuse to believe than vintage solid-state gear can produce satisfactory sounds. Clean, sweet, devoid of the nastiness of most early tranny amps - it stood out amongst its contemporaries as a harbinger of doom for the commercial dominance of the valve.
