The Wilson Audio Sophia is the product of David Wilson's vast accumulated knowledge of designing floorstanding speakers with labor-intensive craftsmanship. In its general appearance, the Sophia looks like a single-box cousin of Wilson's WATT/Puppy. But the Sophia is all new, from its handcrafted enclosure to its custom-built drive-units with its 41"-high, floorstanding, three-way design concept. The 1" inverted-titanium-dome Focal tweeter is similar to the one used in the WATT/Puppy 6, as is the 7" ScanSpeak midrange driver. The 10" woofer, also from ScanSpeak, represents something new for Wilson Audio in that its cone is made of aluminum. High quality crossover slopes and points are chosen for each application. Aesthetic touches include the jewel-like proprietary binding posts and machined ports, both of which impart an impression of luxury.

The Wilson Audio Sophia is musically detailed and highly resolving, engaging listeners with their ability to convey the grace of music. The sound is fleshed out and rich with feelings, details and accuracy. There is ample transparency through the mid range and into the treble, where the Sophias show themselves to be exceedingly refined. Piano and cymbals ring with vibrancy and life. The images are substantial; no wispy, overly airy presentation. Singers sound realistic while massed strings move as one entity. The aluminum woofer is highly articulate and powerful, able to express shading and texture of electric and upright bass, and possesses Wilson Audio's typical punch and slam. It shows remarkable cohesiveness of the sound but not homogenized. The combination of the effortless physicality of the sound and the sense of real space, depth, and breadth brings the reproduction quality to an astonishing degree.
