When the Audio Research Classic 150 is matched with its SP15 preamplifier, some ears are going to perk up and some eyes are going to widen. The SP15 and Classic 150 redefines the audio art, yet remain especially user-friendly. Separately, they can help any system a transparently higher level of resolution - in dynamics, in soundstage, in timbral accuracy. Together with a synergy that almost defies description, they create a whole new level of audio performance. The Classic 150 begins with an all-Fet input stage. Their eight 6550 power output tubes function in triode configuration instead of the customary pentode. As a bonus, the triode configuration assures that the tubes undergo far less stress, prolonging their effective life. Coupled with the Classic 150's massive, tightly regulated power supply and highly efficient ouput transformer, it allows exceptional bandwidth and a noise floor that must be experienced to be believed. To sum up, this unique piece of machine allows SPLs to be musically more satisfying at lower gain settings and still able to provide the gorgeously mellifluous mid-range of classic tube designs.
