Bluenote is an Italian high-end company that makes a sleek-looking and complete line of components, from turntables, arms, and cartridges to speaker systems. The Bluenote Stibbert mk2 is a fully balanced design so it has both XLR and RCA out, running on all voltages from 110 to 240 V without any changeover switch so one can operate it in any country on the fly. It is actually the only CD player on the market with a double chassis completely isolated through 4 conical springs. The main plinth of the CD player chassis is made of a 20mm thick black acrylic shaped like steering wheel. Such special shape, designed to have totally non-parallel edges, increases enormously the structural rigidity, virtually eliminating any vibration feedback.
The Bluenote Stibbert mk2 is floating on a board made in black high-density polished acrylic obtained via “polymeric melting”, as a main electronic cabinet support and a clear acrylic plinth as the board supports the whole structure. The black board is fully curved for increasing the structural rigidity and non-deformable properties. The transparent board of the Blacknote Stibbert mk2 has 4 machine worked aluminium height-adjustable feet with a semi-conical shape with central grooving for ensuring greater insensitivity to vibrations. Each foot has a recessed spike that may be used to couple rigidly the CD Player on its shelf. Acrylic is inert and rigid which makes it ideal for absorbing vibrations.
The LP turntable-like, spring-suspended Bluenote Stibbert mk2 cd player delivers lively and musical sound. When playing vocals, it provides well-controlled, lively, smooth and natural performance. It is detailed and has rich sense of music, delivering an extra-strong sense of involvement. It is tonally neutral, with a bottom octave little short of dynamically electrifying. It also digs deep into the music and retrieves harmonic nuances. A recording that sound rather emotionless on some players can become music with full tonal colours through the Bluenote Stibbert mk2, leaving all the other qualities of the recording fully intact. The soundstage is high, deep and as wide as the boundaries of the listening room, even though the image is slightly contracted in the back.
When played through its single-ended output on Bluenote Stibbert mk2, the midrange is sweet, but not in the truthful sense. In single-ended mode, the field of depth is truncated, front to back, and its amazing stage width is compromised in the rear field. In balanced mode, the soundspace is bigger, deeper, and clearer (in the transparent and “clean” sense). In unbalanced mode, the soundspace is cloudy, smaller, narrower toward the rear, and less nuanced. Another reserveration is that the Bluenote Stibbert mk2 CD player compresses top end dynamics on fortissimo passages, but it compresses these in the same way tube amplifiers do; it gently squeezes them down, without any other form of audible distortion. Once the thunderous bass is back in play, this particular shortcoming is barely noticeable.
