Description :
The Creek 5350SE, designed by Mike Creek as his latest flagship product, is a higher-powered, high-current integrated amplifier featuring a passive preamp stage, but that does not compromise linearity and gain. Creek achieved this in the 5350SE by redesigning the input and driver circuitry of the 5250SE to increase speed and make it more linear. This, combined with reduced feedback, eliminates the active gain stage and keeps the same input sensitivity. Externally, the amplifier sports a slightly larger aluminum case with an exceedingly attractive, 10mm-thick, brushed-aluminum front panel. The 5350SE sports an Alps 27mm Blue Velvet volume pot and fairly elaborate switching. Any of the amplifier's six inputs can be set to record while listening to another, and all are accessible from a slick and user-friendly remote control. The 5350SE includes a headphone amp but not a balance control. On the circuit, it uses a high-current, N-channel-only MOSFET power output stage driven by a P-channel MOSFET phase splitter and double differential voltage amplifier with symmetrical class-A driver, in order to minimize distortion and maximize speed with minimal negative feedback. The Creek 5350SE features a 250VA toroidal transformer and multiple power-supply capacitors totaling 31,000uF. The designer claims that the amplifier's unusually high peak current-drive capability, coupled with its low output impedance, makes it suitable for use with the most demanding speakers.
The Creek 5350SE has three areas that clearly surpass the performance of earlier Creek integrated amplifiers. First, a lifelike, delicate, yet forceful re-creation of transient articulation no matter what the source material - transients are neither too sharp nor too rounded, as in live music. Second, it has an organic reproduction of low-level dynamic nuances and subtle ambient cues, without a trace of electronic artifacts or opacity. Third, degrees of bass definition, articulation, clarity, and bottom-end extension are better than most amplifiers in this price range and/or power rating.
In playing instruments like the woodwinds, all their breathy, pianissimo inflections are intact, floating on individual beds of air on the wide, deep soundstage. Rapid-fire passages clearly articulate with the appropriate wooden thunk, without a trace of blurring or amusical hardness. Vocals are accurately and holographically rendered. Through the Creek 5350SE, every fingerpicked twang on the round-wound strings ring out with the appropriate buzz, thunk, and resonance. With the Creek at fairly loud listening levels, the complex bass passages are rapid, clean, uniform, and coherent. Further down the bass spectrum, the 5350SE impresses with its reproduction of the organ-pedal tones. The Creek reproduces the pedal tones with air, definition, ease, and not a trace of roundness, coloration, or sluggishness. When using the phono stage, it adds no colorations or artifacts of its own to the Creek 5350SE's performance.
