Description :
There are 3 different types of Meridian 508 cd players which have different versions of DACs - 19bit, 20bit and 24bit. They can be easily differentiated by their printing on their front glass display. The 19bit version is printed as "508 High Resolution CD Player". Meridian Audio's 500 series was introduced in 1993, slotting in between its then flagship 600 range and the rather more affordable but still very highly rated 200 models. Like all previous Meridian players, the original 508 employed a Philips CDM4 single-beam swing-arm laser transport. The Meridian 508.20 used the Philips CDM12.4 laser transport which was a high specification version of the CDM12.1 laser transport. The 508.24 used a newer Philips CDM12.5 which has a Hall-Effect spinning motor. Overall, Meridian’s venerable 508 cd player alone had enjoyed more than 20 awards, including a Class ‘A’ rating from Stereophile.
The Meridian 508.20 cd player combines major advances in digital audio and engineering design. The 508 20-Bit cd player incorporates a three-beam laser CD mechanism, for superb sound quality and disc playability. The precision-engineered turntable combines the advantages of drawer loading with the superior disc clamping normally associated with top loading players. The digital signal is decoded using the 20-bit dual-differential Delta Sigma digital to analogue converter, combined with a discrete class A output for superlative audio performance.
In a direct comparison between the Meridian 508.20 and 508.24 by a user, he feels though the 508.20 is not quite as pristine as the 24bit version but he also feels that the musical enjoyment is better out of the 508.20. The 20bit version is more full rich sounding. The 508.24 is a little sharper around the edges but with a lot of CD's, that is not a good thing as it becomes less forgiving to poor quality cd recordings. With the majority of CD's, the 508.20 gives about a good as it gets presentation. On the few, more revealing CD's, the 508.24 will strut its stuff.
