The Rogers LS3/5a 11 ohms was introduced in 1988 using the T27 SP1032 tweeter, B110 SP1228 woofer and a new crossover. After 1987 all LS3/5A crossovers were manufactured by KEF and supplied as complete boards to the manufacturers(Spendor, Harbeth, Rogers, etc). With KEF supplying both drive units and crossover, there was greater consistency of B110 manufacture and eliminating the costly auto-transformer used in the older version. It resulted in simplified new crossover with a smoother response. Matching of relative sensitivity between the B110 and T27 was now achieved with a resistive ladder. The new crossover made bi-wiring possible and although LS3/5As were always used by the BBC with the terminals strapped, this made the speaker more attractive to consumers. Note that all of the 11 ohm models, except for the XLR Rogers and the Harbeths, were bi-wireable to cater for the AB1 subwoofer.
To date, some 50,000 pairs of Rogers have been sold, firmly establishing Rogers as a market leader in quality audio systems. Universally accepted as 'The' reference for miniature loudspeaker systems, the LS3/5a model is still in strong demand from all sectors of the globe. Recently the Rogers ls3/5a 65th anniversary edition has just been reissued to cater to the demand. The Rogers LS3/5a is a widely known speaker for it countervailing attraction is its midband. It has one of the least colored midbands around. It presents the correct musical and tonal balance of the different instruments. The speakers cast a wide, deep, and stable soundstage. The human voice is rendered unadorned to be appreciated. It sounds like a big speaker minus the low bass. The Rogers speakers of this size will have obvious drawbacks especially it's low frequency. However, used as intended in a small apartment or bedroom, it will astound the user at what a shoe-boxed size speaker can do. It's deficiency can be easily made up by it's matching AB1 subwoofer speaker.
