The Meridian G06.2 cd player is a superb, cost-effective introduction to the G Series line. Meridian has given its entire range of G Series hi-fi and home cinema components an overhaul, as well as adding new models. According to the co-founder and lead designer Bob Stuart, the new G Series family is both broader and deeper. It offers customers more individual routes to obtaining Meridian-level music and home-cinema system performance. Meridian built the world’s first audiophile CD player in 1984 and the first two-unit transport and converter in 1986, and has been leading the way ever since. The Meridian G06.2s heritage lies in the Meridian 508, which won over 20 awards, including a Class 'A' rating from Stereophile, and it takes cues from the astonishing Meridian 800 player, for which the Class 'A+' rating was specially added.
Inside the Meridian G06.2, the user will find advanced design in both digital and analogue. The cd player features multi-layer PCBs, four separate power supplies, the latest surface mount technology and carefully selected audiophile quality components along with Meridian's signature quality design and manufacturing. At the heart of the G06.2 are fully-integrated electronics and a computer-style CD/DVD-ROM drive. Although it normally runs at standard CD speed, the drive is capable of spinning the disc much faster, allowing multiple high-speed re-reads to ensure accurate recovery of data from even the most difficult disc. This feature provides ten times the error correction of a conventional CD player. The Meridian G06.2 maximises audio quality by reducing jitter to extremely low levels, for a smooth open, well-defined sound and pinpoint stereo imaging. This is achieved by re-clocking the digital outputs and by a superb direct-coupled audiophile-quality output stage. The player utilises 192 kHz, 24-bit digital to analogue converters for the very highest analogue quality, while the internal circuitry includes a superb analogue design to complement the high-spec DACs and delivering 2V rms with less than –95dB noise and distortion. The result is dramatically improved stereo imaging, and a clear, open and authoritative sound.
The Meridian G06.2 sounded immensely natural. It was big, effortless, sweet, detailed, punchy and engaging. Timbre was beyond criticism. The soundstage was huge and airy with terrific three-dimensionality. There was no harshness in the treble at all. Transient speed and dynamic capability was tremendous with that spellbinding liquid quality. Even when playing difficult tricky disc recordings, the G06.2 pulled the user deep into the music, forgetting all else. Even after many hours of straight listening, with higher sound levels than usual, with no listening fatigue. That's praise indeed. There was an immediate sense of ease. It sounded effortless, agile and nimble, almost liquid. It made the other lesser players sound like they were trying too hard or had to push themselves. The combination of sounding pleasant and mesmerizing at the same time is a curious one. The Meridian G06.2 had the ability to sound detailed and powerful at very low listening levels as well as refraining from sounding harsh and over-powering at high listening levels. There was a surprising amount of detail, air, spaciousness and three-dimensionality, however without sounding fake, artificial or analytical. The soundstage is huge but refrains from being in user's face, although special effects seem to leap around him effortlessly. The Meridian G06.2 made instruments feel very palpable and to have an autonomous existence and still to play an integrated part in the music.
The Meridian G06.2 cd player is a genuine jack of all trades, from classic to metal, acoustic to electronic. It has a tremendous sense of ease and rightness in its presentation. The player is an ideal for many applications, such as an integrated analogue stereo system comprising the G06.2 cd player and the G51 receiver. The G06.2's coaxial digital output can also be connected directly to the Meridian DSP loudspeakers to form a superb quality all-digital stereo CD replay system.
