Description :
Although solid state, the Sugden A21aL uses a single-ended Class A circuit topology which is more usually associated with high-end valves and draws a consistent mean current from the power supply. Conventional amplifiers use separate devices for the positive and negative parts of the waveform, with constantly varying power requirements. The result is a simpler circuit free from crossover distortion but the tradeoff is limited power output and waste heat. Sugden has been making the A21 amplifier in various forms since 1968. It is probably the longest running amplifier in history, and one of the only a select handful of single-ended Class A solid state amplifiers. Despite the large heat sinks, the Sugden A21a is no larger than any of the other slimline amplifiers and it boasts an optional phono input, tape monitoring and stereo/mono switching. Its build quality is distinctly pedestrain, and the PC boards are hand-loaded and soldered, though component quality is good.

Despite how it looks, from the moment Sugden A21aL started playing, it is obvious that this is a very superior sounding amplifier, with an absolutely glorious midband which paints music on a grand scale, with authority, superb articulation and definition. The best of all is a sense of physical presence unusual from such an amplifier. What sets it apart above all else is the astonishing ability it has to bring the subtle texturing and harmonic complexity of instruments to life while it copes with the expressiveness of playing better than virtually any integrated amplifier in experience. Switch the music on and the listener knows instantly he is hearing something close to a real performance. Although the A21aL's power output appears a little limited on paper, it is powerful enough in practice. In conclusion, build quality is neither as slick, nor it seems, as robust as some, and it runs uncomfortably hot but sonically, the Sugden A21aL is in the very top class.
