Description :
Kolster Brandes started in the UK as Brandes in about 1924. Initially they were producing radio accessories such as loudspeakers and headphones, and were sufficiently successful to require larger premises when their works was established. The company gained the name Kolster Brandes in 1930 as a result of changes at their parent company. Kolster Brandes was involved in the construction of complete receivers, and enjoyed notable success. Although the company was not one of the radio "big names", they enjoyed significant success with their range of receivers throughout the 1930's.
The Kolster Brandes KS-651 speakers have a 6-inch drive unit mounted horizontally at the top of a cylindrical cabinet, pointing upwards on to a dispersive cone. This has the effect of radiating middle and high frequencies uniformly over the horizontal plane in contrast, to the conventional forward-facing speakers which become increasingly directional at high frequencies. The Kolster Brandes KS-651 was introduced in the 1960s for stereo listening. Through an omnidirectional design, the speakers give a pleasant spread to the sound. Though the pin-pointing of individual musical instruments is less precise, many people prefer the resulting homogeneity. Shelf mounting is probably preferable for the KS-651 speakers than standing the units on the floor. Some trial and error will be worth-while to get the most pleasing effect taking wall reflections into account.
