The Sonus Faber Minima Vintage comes across as a typical high-class thoroughbred compact of the old-school. It is one of Sonus Faber's proposals to rebuild one of its historical projects for enthusiasts. The Minima Vintage which is a small loudspeaker capable of leaving a deep mark in the history of high fidelity. In fact, the speaker is more in BBC LS3/5a speaker territory than a modern studio monitor. Though the speakers retain their old-fashioned design of the previous successful Minima Amator model, loudspeaker technology advances only incrementally on everyday timescales and there is little about the Minima Vintage that could be described as dated.
The Sonus Faber Minima Vintage is clearly at its most comfortable in the mid and upper midband where a lot of musical fundamentals are placed and also the main part of the voice region. The speakers have a slight emphasis on mid-bass, and part of the midrange, making the sound more open and makes recording sounds more lively, fresh, dynamic. The lowest couple of octaves are on the lightweight side, but not without a hint of muscularity. Transient attacks are slightly softened and rounded. Hence resulting in an incredibly smooth top end that delivers lots of information but never gets aggressive. That's the reason why Sonus Faber speakers are sought after and worldwide famous for playing classical musical. The tweeter used for Sonus Faber Minima Vintage is outstanding and the key factor to great sound. These speakers are designed not to use at very loud headbanging volumes. Push the speaker hard and the treble becomes rather peaky, keep pushing and eventually it generates some grain. At moderate levels, the tweeter is smooth and sweet which is where they are designed to perform at.
The aesthetic design and the classic look of the Sonus Faber Minima Vintage speakers combined with spectacular sound system create an extraordinary and enjoyable experience. There is only one real drawback which is their small size but it is compensated well. The loudspeaker voices to perfection, given the natural limitations imposed by its lack of cubic inches and limited cone radiating area. Still, it images superbly and the slightly romantic warmth of the design is well-judged in this context and works well with the superb aesthetics. The Sonus Faber Minima Vintage has a very precise well differentiated soundstage but lack panache. Because of its compact size, it can offer a very intimate close-up sound but the farther back the soundstage extends, the less precise it becomes.
