The Sony MDS-JA555ES is a killer piece both in terms of sound quality and construction. The JA555ES is arguably the best minidisc deck ever made while the JA333ES comes close. It is designed to make the use of the Sony's latest version of ATRAC, the enabling technology for the whole MiniDisc format. ATRAC DSP Type-R is designed to make the most efficient use of the storage space on the tiny discs and thus provide the best possible sound quality. "If you want the best MiniDisc machine, this is it" - the words of What HiFi from their 2000 awards issue. Construction is exemplary, with an extra-thick aluminium fascia and a double top and bottom plate to stamp out any unwanted vibration and resonance, while audiophile components such as the twin R-core transformers ensure the highest standards of audio performance. The Sony MDS-JA555ES has phenomenal sound quality that is difficult to differentiate from CD playback. It is very difficult to hear difference between a minidisc recorded with the MDS-JA555ES and the original source. This is a striking example of the MiniDisc art and will be able to hold its head up with pride.
