The Naim Audio CDX possesses the usual Naim sonic attributes: On good recordings the sound is fast, tight, rhythmically certain, and spectacularly open and transparent, with an ease of presentation bordering on swagger. Most importantly, the sonic picture hangs together seamlessly, resulting in convincing-sounding music. The overall sonic picture is up-front and immediate which almost makes it relentlessly analytical and ruthlessly revealing, but mesmerizingly detail and flat-out exciting. The Naim CDX expresses large and small scale dynamics with unrestrained power and authority. Even at low volume, the player portrays bass dynamics with satisfying thrust. The player does not sound mushy anywhere in the audible bandwidth at any volume. The Naim Audio CDX is pretty mercurial. It makes bad-sounding discs sound awful and great ones incredibly convincing. By showing no mercy to less-than-exemplary recordings, the CDX makes listening to many heavily processed CDs some what medicinal. The great recordings are balanced up-front, though free of sandy or grainy overlays. The CDX has a HDCD function which offers faster transients and a better delineation of inner detail on HDCD disc recordings. The delicacy, detail, and low-level resolution are amazing.

The CDX alone is an exciting, involving performer, but the addition of the external XPS power supply takes it to another level. The promise of the CDX's extended top end and brisk transient performance is fulfilled, with greater smoothness on top, improved overall focus, and better bass extension and authority. There are discs recordings where there are multiple voices, acoustic and electric guitars, and a drum kit at the back of the soundstage. The singer's vocal is sometimes purposefully ultra close to the mike, sometimes more distant, in coherence to the song and to provide a spatial context for the singers. The CDX/XPS combination reproduces the tonality of each singer/mike combo, sounding edgy or warm where appropriate, each singer's physical and sonic envelope intensely focus in space. The acoustic guitar is richly portrayed, with both transient detail of the pick on the strings and the harmonic overtones of the resonating body. The sonic picture also includes a warm, tremolo-drenched electric guitar and the distant drum kit. In conclusion, the Naim CDX/XPS combo delivers transparency, focus, inner detail, three-dimensionality, timbral accuracy, rhythmic authority, and most everything else an owner wants from a CD player.
