Description :
The Monitor Audio Studio 10 was launched with a good deal of razzmatazz at the 1990 Winter CES. Looks can be deceptive, however, and the Studio 10's modest appearance hides a wealth of high-tech design. The tweeter, for example, is the latest version of the familiar ferrofluid-cooled, gold-anodized, aluminum/magnesium alloy drive-unit with a vented pole-piece that Monitor Audio developed with English manufacturer Elac. But it is the woofer that attracted journalists' attention, the cone being fabricated from metal rather than the usual plastic or paper. The material's high speed of sound and stiffness are things designers find immensely attractive, offering the potential for textbook pistonic behavior throughout the drive-unit's passband. When played and tested, the Studio 10 has that rare ability to allow the listener to forget the hardware, to listen through it to the music. Piano recordings are reasonably closely but not unrealistically presented. The Monitor Audios present the piano a little more forward than it should have been, but still with an exquisite sense of space and with exceptional verve. The bass register of the Studio 10's literally purrs at the listener, which is considered pretty good for bookshelf speakers even though they do not have the deep weight but they were actually closer to what the live sound have been like. The Studio 10s can throw a wide, stable soundstage, at the expense of a little image precision in the center. In small rooms, the Studio 10 can generate prodigious levels of sound. Overall, the performance Studio 10s is rich, exciting, transparent and lively.
