The Esoteric Audio Research, EAR 834 products are the stuff audio dreams are made of. Their scarcity insures that they are more often talked about than heard, and their creator has acquired the reputation of an iconoclastic, innovative, brilliant audio theorist/circuit designer. When the EAR 834 is set for the testing, . it is warm and rich through the midrange and truely tube-like sounding. Its treble extension is grain-free and extended, never brittle or spot lit. Cymbals and such are portrayed in a natural light. The amplifier can play loud, with enjoyable punch, dynamics, and pace, and no perceptible strain or hardening as things get busy. And of course, some congestion do set in. The EAR 834 loses out in its recreation of images within a fully fleshed-out soundstage thus portraying a more 2d than 3D not-so-deep soundstage. Width and height are very well presented, but depth is somewhat flattened compared to a reference setup.
